Look at the 7500/7600 series. They are generally cheaper than the towers and
do a fine job with some judicious upgrades: RAM, hard drive, processor. The
8500 is a bear to get into until you're used to the interior layout. The
7600 is a breeze by comparison. The RAM in your 8500 should work in an 8600
but I don't believe that it will work in later 9600 series Macs. If you go a
step up to a 8600/9600, your G3 upgrade will transfer if it's worth it.
The Beige G3 is also a viable alternative. However, the RAM won't transfer.
Check <http://www.everymac.com> for specs on the Macs you're looking at and
compare them with the 8500 you currently are using. I think you can upgrade
early G3s with ZIF processor cards. Also, it might already have a USB
connection which will help if you need a new scanner or printer.
