Hello Tim
My personal non scientific thoughts and opinions.
The question is not "what is acceptable" but how long will the processor
last ( meet all specifications) operating at these temperatures. ?
Ask them the following question:
Based on your (Sonnet's) in -house Quality Control, what is the
measured operating life in hours for this processor running 7/24 at
a continuous temperature of 57-60C ;and what was the test sample size
and lot size; and what was the calculated MTBF ( mean time between
failures*)?
*out of specification
BTW. With my 7600 / Sonnet Crescendo 400MHz/1MB/ two internal 7200 rpm
hard drives and two internal fans , Metronome measured 28C with a room
ambient of 22C.
Measured at 0430PM after a 0930AM power on
More important , ask yourself where is all that heat generated by the
CPU going?. Put your hand in the air flow flowing out of the box and
judge its temperature. If if feels cool then you can bet that the
built-in fan does not have the capacity to adequately suck all the hot
air out , resulting in the forming of internal "hot spots"
I will bet that there are plenty of heat sensitive components on the
mother board that would be(are) very unhappy living in a continuous
57--60C environment
Using internal , circulating air fans , paying particular attention to
the CPU/ mother board area , will eliminate these hot spots, and cool
down the adjacent components which in my opinion will increase the
operating life of your box.

happiness is a cool (= > 30C) processor
