Hi folks
There was a big lightning storm the other day, and I am not sure but that it
killed the Ethernet capability of the 8600.
The Mac was connected through a router It took out the router (through 3
levels of surge suppressors), but the Starmax and the 8600 appeared
unaffected. (Everything was turned off at the time, except the cable modem).
The Starmax connects just fine, directly to the cable modem of course (the
modem was not damaged). But when I move the connection to the 8600, the
Roadrunner address does not show up on the TCP/IP. I went through the proper
procedure - turn everything off, make connections, power up the modem, wait,
power up the computer, but still, no Roadrunner IP address, and no
connection to the internet. It gives a non-existent address, the same it
gives if you try to connect without being plugged in to the net. Other than
that, the computer is running fine (OS9.1).
The TCP/IP lists the Ethernet option OK. The System Profiler shows "Ethernet
n/a". If this is Not Available, what does it mean? Can it be that ONLY the
Ethernet port got damaged? I have a PCI Ethernet card that I can try and see
if that part works. Is that a reasonable approach? Any other suggestions as
to what might be going on?
While we are at it, anyone have suggestions on better surge suppressors?
What do you guys use?
TIA
Kim
