I started this thread, so I will tell you how mine is set:
I have a whole-house surge suppressor in the main electrical box. There is a
suppressor on the wall plug where I take my power. The power goes to a main
distribution strip, with a built-in suppressor. A cable goes from one of
these outlets to a power box with rocker switches that feed the scanner, 56K
modem, CD Burner, and Router. That power box also has surge suppression
built-in. This makes four levels of suppression. In addition, this power
box's main power switch was turned off because of the storm. But nothing was
actually unplugged.
I am still worrying about the 8600's Ethernet port. It will now recognize
the Roadrunner IP address, but it is slower than a 1200baud modem -
hopeless. But it will, at least, connect every so often. Definitely damaged.
I have put in a Farallon EtherFast card, and I will download drivers
tonight. I'm hoping that it will work that way. Any other damage I should
look for?
Thanks
Kim
