I suppose you mean dial-up connections, but don't worry, this gets relavant
down near the end.

I have a cable modem connection shared through a D-Link combo
router/firewall/4 port switch/who knows what else, going to an iMac and a
6400/180, both running 9.1. By tonight I should have my new Pentium II
system sharing the connection too. (Yes, I know, "Boo! Hiss!", but I
bought this PC very cheap at a flea market because it came with a nice 17"
Trinitron, and I needed a new monitor for my 6400. Now I can flip between
Windows and Mac OS withthe flip of an A/B switch and remind myself how nice
one looks and the other doesn't.)

It's sounds pretty extravagant, but a cable internet subscription is
actually cheaper than the combined cost of a normal ISP and a second phone
line. I do miss having two phone lines, for doing the occasional conference
call, or using the phone when somebody else in the house is already on it.

The router was cheap too, only $65 after mail-in rebate, and I have no
complaints about it. You can even plug a normal dial-up modem into a serial
port on it and share that connection, or use it as a backup if the Cable or
DSL goes out.

When I first set up this small network, my 6400 was running 8.1. I could
not get it to hold an internet connection more than 10 seconds. Netscape
would work perfectly for the time it took to load a page, and then the first
link I clicked would say "connecting to blah blah" or "looking up host blah
blah" forever. I upgraded to 9.1 (used the disk that came with OS X, which
I bought for the iMac) and now everything works fine.

Everything is supplied by the server, or in my case, the router. I just set
"ethernet" and "use DHCP" in the TCP/IP control panel, and don't have to
fill anything else in. That same option was available in the 8.1 control
panel, but when I used it, it caused the control panel to unexpectedly quit
with an error.

I'd like to know how to make DHCP work under 8.1, because I've got a 6200 (I
know, another hated machine) that I'd like to get onto the network too, once
I find an ethernet card for it.
