Perhaps I was too wordy.  In response to your questions; I do not know if
the newer iMacs use the converter board or not, as I have not personally
serviced one yet.  You can get all the specs on the Apple web site. Open up
the case and you will see it there on the back of the cd drive.  I think in
your situation, if you plan to keep the machine, why not just upgrade to a
newer Apple CDRW ?  Seems to be the best option and ya gotta replace it
anyway.  Just order part at best price you can find (Apple web site has part
numbers too) and install it yourself.  Trying to make something else fit or
work can be troublesome.  If your drive is dead it's dead, if just not
mounting their is a slight chance it could be that board, but most of the
time it is drive failure.  Since discovering this I test board first on
machines out of warranty to save customers money.  Apple used so much mixed
up hardware sometimes I wonder what their design engineers were smoking...
and this certainly hurt them in the market too. I advise upgrading to an
Apple CDRW since you have to replace it anyway.  Open it up and you will
see....
