I opened my Mac 8500 to install a 128MB RAM chip. Feeling somewhat cavalier
after 5 years of no problems playing with this machine, I did not wear the
anti-static wrist guard (!), but I did touch the metal housings, etc.. I
removed the two PCI cards -- one for ultra scsi, the other usb. I removed
what I think was the cpu daughter board -- it has that big aluminum heat
sink. I removed that little screw through the motherboard (using a modular
magnetic tip screwdriver!) I yanked out the power/reset button assembly.
Then, with much nudging, crackling, and creaking (!), I slid out and tipped
up the motherboard to get access to the DIMM slots. Finally, I snapped in
the RAM chip and replaced all the components. Went I tried to powerup the
computer, the green LEDs flashed, but didn't hold and the back of the
computer near the fan housing made a clicking sound; otherwise, nothing. A
veteran of these sorts of scares, I pulled everything out again and made
double sure all the various cards and cables were snapped fully into place.
I even tried removing the new RAM completely. Same green flash and click,
then nothing.

What did I zap? How to fix?
