I'm posting this to all of the LEM Lists I subscribe to because I'm sure
you will all find it interesting for yourself or someone you know sooner
or later. The Mac I have been working with is a PPC 603 based PCI 6500.
I went looking for a Xclaim 3D Plus video card after picking up a
Sonnet-enhanced G3 L2 6500/400... to get the use of two monitors and to
improve the anemic 6500 built-in 2-meg video capability.
No dice. Out of stock. And too expensive.
I did find a lot of encouragement on the 6400 Zone on the internet to
try the Voodoo3 2000 PCI...even though it violated the Apple edict that
the 6500 could only accept 6.88 inch long PCI cards. Thanks for the
suggestions and assistance.
These cards are 3dfx 16-Meg video PCI interface cards for Pentium-based
computers and are therefore pretty cheap. I picked one up on eBay from
the PC Video Cards auctions and stuck it into the 6500, ran a utility
that over-wrote the firmware on the card to flash the ROM on the card
and turn it into a Macintosh compatible card.
Yikes.
It worked like a charm.
Search the internet for Voodoo3 2000 PCI and include it in your list of
possible PCI video improvements for the 6400 and 6500 series Macs.
Mike.
