I have an 8500/180/208 RAM/OS 8.6/FireWireDirect FireWire/USB PCI Card.
Last month, in August, my 4.5 Narrow HD died [or so I thought ... still
not so sure] then I bought an Ultra 9.1 GB Seagate Barracuda. I used
FWB HDT PE to set this drive up in MacOS Extended.
Today the new HD crashed big time during a regular usage time. I
haven't added any new software since the day I installed the new HD.
The computer's main uses are signs, billing and internet. There are no
games on it. I had just turned on the computer so this software was the
first program I used.
I just did my routine HD and computer maintanence on Saturday, September
8, 2001.
I was doing some routine things in my sign program and suddenly the
computer quit. The error message was not entirely readable. I decided
to try getting into the same program again. This time I got some weird
message about not having enough memory. Again the error message was
incomplete. Some of top and bottom part were missing but outlined box
was complete [like the first message]. I could see some numbers and a
symbol like "- 0, 2 *" and something about the memory. The message was
pretty garbled.
Anyway the following is what Disk Warrior showed me was incorrect with
the drive. DW was able to repair everything. All data was recovered
and recorded to CD-Rs.
The Allocation Block Start of the Volume Information is incorrect and
needs repair.
The Allocation Block Size of the Volume Info is incorrect ...
and the following as above "... of the Volume Information is incorrect
and needs repair."
The Volume Bitmap Start ...
Creation Date
Modification Date
Attribute Bits
Number of Root Files
Allocation Pointer
Number of Allocation Blocks
File Clump Size
Next Catalog ID
Number of Free Blocks
Volume Name
Tree Clump Size

Number of Root Folders

Embedded Signature
Embedded Extents Data

All were incorrect and were repaired.
Isn't that the entire structure of the HD? So what does this mean? I
have never encountered a problem like this with a HD. When the first HD
failed I heard sounds like clicking and scraping. Then slowly things
started to deteriorate. This HD is new and this happened suddenly.
After I recovered the drive fully, copied my files to CD-Rs I then used
TTP 3.0.1 to look at every aspect of the computer. The RAM, ROM, PRAM,
etc. No real serious problems were found so far. There were some
incorrect dates and these were repaired. There was one conflict with
some USB extension which I am not using at this time so I disabled that one.
Tonight I am running a Surface Scan with TTP 3.0.1 to see what it finds.
