Some people have to use third party formatting software, because
Apple Drive Setup will not support their drive. It can be hacked,
however.
Others choose third party software because of certain performance
benefits. Some, such as FWB, have lots of extra features, including
support for arrays. I tested Apple Drive Setup, FWB, and Silverlining
(LaCie). I didn't see enough of a performance increase to justify the
hassle of third party software unless required. FWB was a bit faster,
but you're tied to it.
One problem with using commercial formatting software, some of which
are quite expensive, is that you need to keep up to date. You may end
up paying for a lot of upgrades just to remain compatible. The good
thing about using Apple's software is that every upgrade installer
comes with a fresh driver, if necessary.
I wonder if anyone else has info. on drive software performance.
