Ok, now I AM confused! I thought I found the problem with the HD only
to discover that my serial port, printer, works just fine. I hooked my
HP LaserJet 5 MP up to it without a problem, it prints.

The serial port tests fail with TTP 3.0.1 but it works with the printer.
I am going to test it one other way before I say I am done with it.

The situation the other day involved the use of the printer port which
my cutter/plotter connects to. This happened before with my other HD.
It could be the serial cable to the device too. I have a new one so I
will replace it.
