Are their 3 PCI slots or 6, the 8600 only has 3 and the 9600 has 6!

Most likely it a 9600 then, as the 8600 has on board video and the 9600 doesn't

Check the monitors and sound control panel, under sound, see if the sound
monitoring source it set to cd or something else.
That might just be it.
