The 10.1 instructions say only that 9.1 is required, but that they recommend 9.2.1, which is included. No mention is made of a "special version" of 9.1, but I seem to recall the 9.1 that was available through Software Update had certain newer components than the 10.0 version. But, since 10.1 is newer than that, I'd guess it would work with both. Have you checked Macfixit's archives on this?
As for 9.2.1, it should update *any* OS version that will run on a supported machine.
