Never thunk of this - a *pram battery* could cause all this stuff, 
and the shop wouldn't necessarily pick up on that??

Did. Didn't help.

The only thing I can think of is that I might have introduced some 
stray static electricity at some point when plugging in all the 
boards - I don't have a wrist strap but kept the p/s plugged in and 
tried to remember to touch the case before reaching for a board, but 
all it takes is one slip-up. "Sad Macs" had only a couple of mentions 
of problems like this, with a vague reference to a non-addressable 
ROM call as the culprit, perhaps I damaged that part of the logic 
board at some point.
