Try re-building the desktop file.  When booting up, just before the last
extension loads, press and hold down the control and option keys.  You will
be prompted to say yes to re-building the desktop, say yes.  If you have a
bunch of junk on the desktop other than icons and aliases, consider
re-situating them first.
