There are very few reasons to pick a 9x00 machine. OS X compatability or more PCI slots. There is no real speed difference. Personally I haven't found a reason to use more than 2 PCI slots in my 9500, but I use it for OS X, which is something that it is _very_ good at.
Personally, I'd hunt down a B&W G3 that has an AGP slot and go with that. Voodoo cards are going out quickly, since they won't be supported in OS X. I'm sure others might have different opinions, but if a G3 upgraded 7x00 isn't cutting it for you, it's unlikely that a 9x00, or even a beige G3 will do it. If you go B&W, theres very little price reason not to get an AGP model, and theres so much more compatability there. You could get a top of the line ATi Radeon 7500...
