> I swear I was holding [a $20 FW+USB card] in my hand at comp usa

You were not dreaming. I bought two of these $20 CompUSA FireWire+USB
cards. If CompUSA won't acknowledge the product number, email me
off-list and I'll go find the box for you.

Got one in my Beige G3 right now; Works great under OSX.1 and 9.2.2.
If it's not real, guess I'll have to disconnect my FW hard drive and
USB keyboard & mouse immediately, before they become vapor too! :-)

Was fine with MacOS 8.6 through 9.1 in a 9500, but TOTALLY horked the
system when I installed the CompUSA card in a 9500 with OSX.1 already
installed--the 9500 refused to boot even after I removed the CompUSA
card. Tried everything I could think of, but eventually the savants
at MacGurus.com had to tell me to disconnect all SCSI and IDE drives
and reset PRAM via CUDA before I reconnected any drives. Not
recommended. (Later I saw this 9500+OSX total-crash problem with $12
and $20 generic USB-only cards, so I've stopped installing OSX on my
9500s.)

Would not work at all in a 20th Anniversary Mac even if I used
Apple's PCI bridge patch downloaded from both Orange Micro or Sonnet.
USB and FW drivers installed, so at least the card was recognized by
the installer application, but no USB or FW device was ever
recognized from any port of the card from my TAM.
