No, it's a common cable.  A bit expensive though.  Typically bring $20
used. For a 17" monitor, probably not worth the money. For a 19" or a
21" maybe.

Sure it's compatible, but you'll need to install a card.  For the PCI
Macs, the easiest card to use is one of Radius's PrecisionColor cards. 
They're pretty much PnP.  The trick though is to use a seperate monitor
to set the Apple Monitors CP.  The Radius card is configured by holding
down the "T" key during boot.  If the monitors CP isn't preconfigured,
you will loose sync again.  It's a PITA sometimes, but it is do-able.

After you get the card and the cable, p-mail me and I'll walk you
through it.
