David, And you should ask the obvious, since it is true that I'm an idiot... I do have a RAM disk allocated, I use it to cache my browser files. I THOUGHT I set it to around 5 MB, but after reading your email I double-checked and UhOh.. I had it set at 50,912!! (When I checked it before I didn't examine it closely enough and read it as 5,912... PROBLEM SOLVED!
But I still don't understand why the System memory-hogging persisted when I booted from the CD. I thought that would revert everything to a default state..
