It's called up-front engineering.  Apple does the heat balance 
calculations and subsequently makes sure there is proper air flow in 
the computer case design.  Other manufacturers may take a computer 
case and toss in the components.  "Hey, Fred.  The processor is 
runnin' too hot."  "Put another one of those noise-generating fans in 
there."   ;-)

That fan pulls air out of the computer case, over the power supply 
components, and out of the computer causing room air to enter the 
computer case, flow over the hard drives, DIMMs, CPU, etc.  You 
wouldn't want the heat from the power supply blown over your 
motherboard.  Even peecees don't make that mistake.   ;-)
