Susan, I have done some of what you suggest, by extracting the two Firewire extensions (v 2.8.4 I believe) from the 9.2.1 installer tome and running them with OS 9.1 very successfully. I figure that any improvements that they make in those extensions, I want. I think the last standalone Firewire extension installer offered by Apple is v 2.5.
Using this logic (maybe good, maybe bad, YMMV), USB might be a logical candidate if that is important to you without the full 9.2.2 installer baggage. Good luck.
