That's the part I don't understand: there *is* an option for both 1024 and 1280 at 75Hz, just not 1024 at 60Hz like the 4400 (so long as color depth is kept at thousands or below). I need 60Hz because that is the max on my monitor (a VGA I dug out of the trash, if that tells you anything!). The 7500 has 2MB, and I don't believe the 4400 has any more than that -- but I'm certain this has nothing to do with VRAM.
