Thanks to all who responded to my question about cooling issues, especially PeterH with the fan info. I now have the 65 cfm fan installed and working fine. (It wasn't much fun putting the PS back together, ugh.)
This fan does seem to run quieter, and indeed it is cooling better. Whereas before Metronome read the Sonnet CPU as 27 degrees C, now it's a consistant 23 degrees. As some of you pointed out though, the 27 isn't too high anyway. Now I'm wondering if cooling per se was not my problem to start with. Even now, once the computer has been running 2 or 3 hours it gets noisier, seems to be "working" harder. Do you think the Power Supply itself is going? What would be the symptoms of this, if so? I do have a spare 7600 PS from a carcass that I could install if you think it would make sense. The other thought I have is that whatever is telling the fan that something is overheating is out of whack. In other words, it THINKS it's too hot even though it isn't. Other than replacing the PS, is there anything else to try?
