The PC case it steel framed, the G3 case has plastic drive carries IIRC 
(from my 7500 days). Also the Apple drive sleds do allow a tiny amount 
of movement. It may also just be  that the 24x rotation was setting uo a 
standing wave (sympathetic resonance) somewhere in the case body. I 
think the plastic mounting is the key though. the 48x CD was the 
standard in the G4 and that case also rattles a bit with a 24x in it (I 
had a B&W G3 too once). I think the CD is just poorly made and it needs 
a solid steel chassis to keep it from shaking.
