ok, I am learning almost more than I can handle in one day.
I just called support and am told it is a direct connection to the
internet at least from the modem/bridge it is. On my side of the modem it
uses NAT. The modem comes pre-configured with a login that must be changed
initially by logging in and going to some website that will then re-program
it with my user login. Once that is done it is always on and I don't have
to think about it again.
I forgot to ask about the filtering, and the tech did not know how to
setup a web server or email server, but didn't think there are restrictions
as long as I could figure out how to do it. It is a dynamic IP, and being
behind the modem may make it difficult. Sustworks suggests dynDNS.org and
that may be able to help set up a web server.
    Whew!
