<<RECAP: Installed 4 new 128 RAM DIMMs in a 7300 with NewerTech 604e/200
upgrade card and 512k cache. When interleaved AppleTalk Ethernet slowed to
crawl. When not interleaved everything worked OK.>>
--------------------------------
Today, the problem remained after pulling the suspected 512k cache; so I put
it back in.

THE SOLUTION: interleaving different 128 RAM DIMMs all with the same spec's
and purchased from the same supplier (Velocity Upgrades) but with obvious
different sets of chips.

The spec's from the label attached ALL 8 DIMM's read:
16x64-60/FPM/128MB/4K/2BANK.

The P/N of the four DIMM's causing the problem is VM165166AB62 (the 2's).
The P/N of the four DIMM's that previously worked OK is VM165166AB6S (the
S's).

The 2's all have identical chips and were ordered a few weeks ago.

The S's have two different sets of chips (according to their markings and
physical size of the horizontal one). They were ordered in pairs at different
times last year. And all S's have different chips than the 2's, again
according to their markings.

Putting two 2's slots A3, B3 and one set of two S's in slots A4, B4 solved
the problem. The ethernet is up to speed and MacBench shows a 7% CPU benefit
to the interleaving; TTP shows all RAM is interleaved.

However, when I tried the other set of S's in A4, B4 slots, the 7300 would
either bomb on startup or had applications unexpectedly quitting once I got
by the startup sequence.

More info: all the old RAM (the S's) had worked interleaved in this computer
with no unusual problems for months before they were replaced by the new RAM
(the 2's). And all the 2's have tested OK with RAMometer and TTP; even when
interleaved.

I no longer have any problems; not sure what conclusions if any can be drawn
from this.

Best wishes--glen
