David ,
I don't know if you are still having a problem or not but this
might be of value to anyone putting
computers together from odd parts. Used parts ( and even new ) have
sometimes been subjected to dirt, corrosion and airborne film contaminants.
All of which can prevent electrical contanct.
Cigarette smoke is probably number one among these. It comes into
the computer when it is at working temperature and coats the parts as it
cools down during shut off. There is probably an electrical attraction to
charged particles involved also. Open PCI slots seem to be most vulnerable
as they are often near an opening to the outside.. But cooling fans will
draw it into a closed case and even fiilled slots can have it develope over
time. Probably due to expansion and contraction with temperature change.
The various port connectors are also subject to this as are electronis
cards left laying unprotected on work tables etc..
A thorough cleaning with electronic cleaner often ignores the slots
and ports. These take special methods and great care to do right.
When a system fails we all have our favorite hardware and software
causes. I too have installed my latest prize and wound up with a problem.
Sometimes it is a bad component or the wrong software. But, putting
simple things first, when assembling hardware anymore. I clean thoroughly
all electrical contacts no matter how old or where they are from. Contact
strips on card edges, slots, connectors and ports. Because my experience
has been that these have often been the real cause of the problem and
often simultaneously the most and least obvious,
depending on how myopic one is that particular day!
