'Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.' --Hanlon's Razor Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 09:02:10 -0600 To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (PCI PowerMacs) From: Paul Stamsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Cutting threads (was Re: Macintosh: spawn of the Devil (very OT) Cc: Carolyn Shere <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" ; format="flowed" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
About 8:21 am -0500, on 4/25/02, an e-mail from Carolyn Shere sagely related: -> This particular thread was one of the stranger ones. But regardless -> of what I think of the topic, I want to complain, on a general basis, -> not on this particular thread. Since we have all the new list -> nannies, every off-topic thread is shut down within a day. I had only -> five messages about this particular one. It wasn't exactly running -> rampant. It had, however, run rampant elsewhere and was a particularly egregious subject. Religion, like politics, really has no place on this list. It seems like this list, while still extremely valuable and -> helpful, does not have any life in it anymore. Another recent -> off-topic that was shut down was about Velocity RAM. I fail to see -> why information on products related to my Mac are off-topic. Velocity is a for-profit company. Because of that some of the comments became quite commercial, IINM. This -> wasn't even a "just for fun" thread, it really had computer value. As -> soon as someone says "this is off-topic", the list nannies jump in -> and end it. I really liked feeling like the people on this list were -> really people, but it hasn't felt that way in a long time. But then, -> I like things that are "just for fun", which is probably why I use a -> Mac and not a PC. As a lister, I get quite tired of the commercials elsewhere and figure if I wanted to read commercial advertising I could subscribe to a newspaper. In addition, a lot of these threads get pretty "me-too-ish" and both the Velocity and "spawn" threads were getting a lot of me-too's. The " spawn" thread was also getting a fair number of complaints, which is one way I alert to a problem.
