For what it's worth, my 9600/233 boots off it's TDK 32x burner attached to a VST (Promise) UltraTek card, but only if the hard drive (also ATA) isn't bootable for some reason. If there's a bootable CD in the burner when you boot and the hard drive IS bootable, the computer hangs at the grey screen until you take the CD out and reboot.
