<< For what it's worth, my 9600/233 boots off it's TDK 32x burner attached to a VST (Promise) UltraTek card, but only if the hard drive (also ATA) isn't bootable for some reason. If there's a bootable CD in the burner when you boot and the hard drive IS bootable, the computer hangs at the grey screen until you take the CD out and reboot. >> This is pretty typical of all the cards which used Firmtek LLC's firmware ... which includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the ProMax TurboMax UATA/33 card (ACARD chipset) and the VST UATA/66 card (Promise chipset). The specific behavior varies with the UATA card, the Mac model, and the MacOS release. In general, these cards were all sold as hard drive support cards, not as "do all" support cards. YMMV ... very greatly. And, FWIW, Firmtek LLC's OS X "upgrade" for VST's UATA/66 card ... available from OWC ... has some very interesting quirks, such as REQUIRING that the Master be a hard drive, otherwise the Slave won't be recognized at all. And, finally, if that flaw wasn't enough, Firmtek LLC's 2.1.2 release for the VST UATA/66 card also has a flaw in that the Apple System Profiler (ASP) will not correctly recognize other PCI cards. If you back off to the non-OS X 1.1.2 release, then all PCI cards are correctly recognized. Caveat emptier (sic). Peter. -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
