Are you using the latest 5.1.4 IE?   I found that I had a similar 
problem with 5.0, but it seems to have been resolved with 5.1. 
Also, try allocating a RAM disk and having IE use that as it's Cache. 
Finally, how full is your system disk and how fragmented is it?
