PPC(only) software won't run at all on 68ks. You'll either get a warning from the program itself, or the OS telling you that it can't run that kind of file and it might be damaged. 68k code, on the other hand, generally runs more or less fine on PPCs, though on the slower PPCs it tends to be slower than a well-equipped 68040 Mac. That's the beauty of PPCs. 68k and PPC Macs are almost as different as PCs and Macs, just that the designers set it up so that it's nearly transparent to a user.
