Hi, all you Mac experts,

Thanks to the six or seven of you who responded to my
original memory problem of a few days ago, especially
for the suggestion from several to turn off the
"Startup Memory Tests" in the memory control panel
(apparently a new feature in OS 8.6). Doing this
cleared up my startup difficulties. Despite the
probable differences in refresh rates (1k vs 4k?)
between my preexisting 32 MB DIMMs and the new 128s, I
installed the two 32s in slots A4 and B4 slots and the
six 128s in the remainder slots, thus allowing
interleaving. Other than some unusual whirring and
high RPM sounds that first day, I've since experienced
flawless performance and an apparently quiet and happy
machine. RAMometer also reports nothing amiss, so it
appears that I will keep these new DIMMs after all.

Other than increased memory, this PowerMac 7500 is
"stock," with its PowerPC 601 putting along at 100
MHz, with 256k of external L2 cache. What upgrade(s)
might now be considerd for this computer? I also have
a Performa 6400/200, but use this slower but more
stable 7500 as my primary Mac for editing music MIDI
files. Now I would be interested in upping the speed
to perhaps 250 MHz. Is that even advisable,
especially with my nonstandard mix of 128 and 32
DIMMs?

I also still wonder if it is a good idea to have the
startup memory tests permanently disabled, or should
one periodically (i.e., every six months or so) enable
them for a quick test? Perhaps a monthly RAMometer's
test is sufficient. After some period of stability, I
may replace those last two 32s with 128s, thus upping
the RAM out at 1024. While that seems downright
gluttonous to me, I've always been told by the experts
to "max out the RAM!"

Once again thanks for the helpful advice. Keep it
coming. I need all I can get!

Greenfield
