I have a 9600. My floppy drive worked at first then had the same problem you are having, then the floppy drive worked again after a clean install of the operating system. 8600/9600 systems have strange problems every now and then. I also cleaned the floppy drive with a kit bought at the local computer store. That didn't do any good. I could also see that the drive heads were fine, no bending, mutilation, etc.
