I'd like to give a collective thanks here to all for the ideas and 
suggestions. It's much appreciated.

Yes, I did trash the prefs (the whole folder and replaced from a 
previous backup version that was KW-----Known Working)

Replaced Finder.

Replaced System file.

Replaced Prefs folder.

Pram battery is new.

TechTool checks OK.

Norton Checks OK (two versions).

Aliases are working.

Apps are working correctly.

Machine runs normally except it REFUSES to start the items in the 
Start Up Folder.

Weird......

PS The only thing I HAVE NOT done is zap the PRAM but it seems 
unlikely to be the cause. And thanks Terry, I'll try your suggestion 
and let you know.
