Hi Jim, After *much* monkeying around with it, my final solution was to use Clean-Install Assistant 1.1 and yank all my stuff out of the System Folder, reinstall 8.1 and put everything back. It finally cured the problem. I have no idea what was wrong or why none of the myriad of Mac utilities I tried failed to report anything wrong or find the problem. I guess I can't complain; MTBF for this machine was 6 + years with nary a hair out of place. I guess they all deserve to break once in a while. (and technically it still worked fine, it just wouldn't look at the Startup folder items any longer). Thanks to all who responded with suggestions. 6400 is happy again.
