OS9 is not actually required. MacOS 8.6 supports Apple's USB 1.4.x 
(the latest), and FireWire 2.3 (not the latest) ships with my copy of 
MacOS 8.6.

I suggest you get an Orange Micro or Sonnet brand card. The 6500 has 
a firmware bug related to PCI bridges; only these two vendors ship 
the patch to support the 6500 with their USB+FW combo cards.
