If everything is slower then just maybe there is a coincidental setting or
event that is causing the slowdown.

In pre 9, general controls Control Panel protecting the System Folder slows
it down.
I have heard of cases where an alias of HD in Apple Menu can slow down.

Otherwise I think you could temporarily replace old ram and see if it speeds
up again? If not then its Disk or software related methinks.
