I had the same problem last summer. I had to unplug it to turn it off. 

It also would repeat last letters or digits endlessly.

The culprit was STATIC ELECTRICITY at the keyboard!

I was finally able to predict when it would and would not work.
Depended on RH, dry is bad.

Wet your hands, dry them slightly and add a ground wire to your body.

Added taped al foil, grounded, under kb and changed the rug and chair
and reversed wall plug and all is well so far.
