I don't know what you have done so far to resolve the problem, but the first thing I
would do is run DiskWarrior (after having booted from the CD, of course) and rebuild
the disk directories. Your disk may have damaged directories and/or cross-linked
files, which could be responsible for the problems you've described. After running
DiskWarrior, I would then run TechTool Pro, again off the boot CD. If these programs
do not provide relief, you might then try Symantec SystemWorks as a last resort,
although if the first two don't do the trick, I doubt that Norton Disk Doctor will.

Also, check your DIMMs and make sure they are properly seated. (In truth, though,
TechTool's memory test should have already told you whether the memory is good or
not.)

You say that you've reinstalled the OS many times, but did you back up all data on
your disk and do a low level format on your boot drive before installing the OS? Do
you know for sure that your drive is not defective?

Have you tried zapping PRAM while booting up? How about rebuilding the desktop?

I'm just throwing out a whole bunch of ideas, some of which you may already have
tried, but just trying to cover all bases. If none of these things correct your
problem, take a couple of aspirin and call me in the morning. ;-)
