I have seen situations where the (plain) Monitors control panel can do
things that the Monitors & Sound panel can't, including resolutions. With
anormal install of the Mac OS, you can find it in a folder called "Apple
Extras" or something like that.

As for the file problem, it may be inconvenient, but probably the best way
to deal with it is to reintitialize the 8.6 partition as HFS+. 8.6 can
handle it. If it already is HFS+, then I don't know what to say.
