I'm planning to buy a PCI UATA 100/133 controller for use with the Maxtor D740X-6L (UATA 133) and the stock Quantum 6 gig from the B&W G3 (is this one ATA66?) BTW is that even possible to stripe that old Quantum with the new Maxtor?
The one I'm looking at is the SIIG 100/133 one. They have the 100/133 Pro and the 100/133 RAID versions. Offcourse is the RAID card much more expensive, but the card has a dipswitch for striping (RAID 0). What if I buy the Pro card and use SoftRAID to stripe my both HDs, that should work fine in OS 9.x, right? But what if I use OS X.x and start OS X, are both HDs still striped then? And the other way around, if I use the RAID s/w from OS X to stripe the HDs are both HDs seen as one in OS 9 then? Unfortunately is the SIIG card not available in Europe, the closest countries which sell them here are Germany and the UK, so should I get the ACARD 100/133? What is the difference between the ACARD and the SIIG? Does anyone know perhaps if I can buy the card somewhere else? If I buy it in the US I have to pay a lot to the customs so that's not an option. Another question comes to my mind about striping: I followed the advice of a lister and downloaded the two Mac PDFs from ACARDs site (where the one for the Pro version is a bit corrupted BTW), and they advice you to initialize both HDs with the switch on the card in the default 'normal' mode, then set the switch to 'striping' mode and initialize them again as one. But what if you decide to add one or two HDs later to the other channel of the card? You have to set the switch to normal again to initialize the new HDs and then again in striping mode, but isn't that dangerous for the other HDs?
