Hi Michael,
That "icon" is called the Application Menu and if you hold down the mouse
you can "tear it off" and put it anywhere you want - very handy!

This is your lucky day!
I had the identical Finder problem on a friends B&W G3 and tried every
option at my disposal. Didn't Zap the pram though - I tend to save that as
a "desperate measure".

Anyway this was the fix:
(and thanks to Steve and Dean of this list for help with the following
proceedure)

* Get a fresh copy of your Finder file from a boot CD by first copying it
   to a floppy or Zip.
* Reboot from a Bootable CD by holding down the "C" key for a longish time.
* Drag your old Finder file and Finder Preferences to the trash.
* Insert the floppy with your replacement Finder and drag and drop it onto
your main System Folder Icon so that it copies-in.
* Reboot, empty the trash and use TechTool Pro to WIPE the Trash
and maybe to "wipe all unused space" for good measure.

My Norton 6 refuses to Wipe my Trash or Unused Space but TechTool Pro 3.04
does both quite happilly.

Hope I didn't leave out anything.
Write off-list if you need to.

Terry
