Possibly your drivers have gotten corrupted? Run drive setup and 
re-install the drivers, that might fix the problem.

I have a Seagate ST15150 drive that displays similar problems, in that 
it will usually not mount at startup, but will after a restart or if I 
bang on it with SCSIProbe a couple of times.

In my case I suspect it's because it's ROM'ed as a Compaq drive, for a 
RAID; and it's waiting for some startup signal from the RAID controller, 
even though, according to the jumper settings, it shouldn't be.
