Have you tried swapping the SCSI cables? (Is it an external drive?) I found I had a bad 25-50 pin cable not too long ago, and replacing it solved the intermittent peculiarities my external drive was experiencing. The old cable worked fine for many years, then just winked out on me. Go figure.
