"1) Can one get better resolutions and rates with a faster processor card
in any of the 7500-8600 series (and does it matter which), or is the
bottleneck somewhere other than the CPU?

For some of us, $500 is real money. (:-<) I'd like to digitize videos for a
videographer friend of mine, but neither of us is ready to spend $500, in
addition to all the other costs.

I've been told, by the way, that the Quadra 840AV is the one Mac that can
digitize VHS (and maybe Hi-8) with only the built-in hardware with little
or no loss of quality! Does anyone know anything about this? What, if any,
would be reasons for not using such a setup?"

Hello Aaron,

A faster processor will not get you better better video capture. The
bottleneck is hard disk (speed and size) and ultimately the PCI bus.
If you want to digitize uncompressed VHS (I would suggest 480x320) you need
to capture 9.2 MB per second. That is only possible with a fast hard disk
(UltraSCSI or better or a new ATA disk).
I am not sure about the Quadra (what hard disk did it come with?). The
PowerMac 7500-8600 are unmatched as far as uncompressed video capture is
concerned (all the way up to 576x768!).
