I have Eudora Pro 5.1.3 on my 7300/180 which I G3ed/400. It daily downloads 50-plus messages as a group in a couple minutes through my slow dial-up ISP. Before then, my IIvx (33MHZ) took only slightly longer to download the same quantity of email, also using Eudora.
I agree with Terry - something's not right with your Eudora. I've had problems with Eudora corrupting regularly over a period of two to three months with one symptom being slow download (or no download at all), but I fix it with a reinstallation. After each reinstallation, I have to re-enter my registration number (Eudora Help menu, then Payment and Registration) to get rid of the display ads. I think (not sure) this also gives me the option to get rid of the requirement for password use; also, Checking Mail in the Settings has a clickbox for remembering the password. Eudora takes a little getting used to after using Netscape. But, it's worth it after the transition.
