ok, I have an old 9500 I bought from an old roomate for $20 for use as a file server here at the house since my G3 is going to my new office(yay) and my powerbook doesn't have a very big drive on it, yet I still want access to all my mp3s, work stuff etc. I also plan on turning all my CDs into mp3s so I can access them on the laptop or out in the living room some time in the future when I put a lil 'puter out there for that purpose. I'm also using it to store my old work, digital photos and what have you.
But the computer seems to like to freeze at random some times, but will always freeze when I'm sending files to it from another machine. it's very frustrating... here's the computer's vital stats and tid bits that may help diagnose the problem. it's a 9500/132 which has a 604ev/250MHz processor from a Supermac s900. 384Megs RAM, two 128meg DIMMS in slots A1 and B1, two 64meg DIMMS in slots A2 and B2. 200meg IBM SCSI HD for the system(yanked the origional 1gig quantum because it had some problems) twin 120gig IBM ATA/100 HDs set up as a RAID-0. VST ATA/66 duel channel PCI card in the top slot, IxMicro TwinTurbo 128 8meg from a G3 in the 4th slot down, and an Apple 10/100 Ethernet card from a G3 in the bottom slot. The computer is running OS 8.6 stripped down to the basics, the only non apple extention is for SoftRAID. Things I've tried... at first I thought it was that 1gig HD that was origional to the computer, it had some problems so I yanked it out and replaced it with a 200meg IBM drive that I know is good. The computer does start up a little faster now and copys to that drive are much zippyer. Than I thought it might be heat, so I put a new dab of thurmo grease on the processor, replaced the fan that blows on the PCI cards since that one was dead, and replaced the powersupply fan since it didn't seem to be blowing much and cleaned all the dust and gunk out as well. The new PS fan seems to do the same... Does the Powersupply control the fan speed some how? The next thought was memory... Tech Tool(v2.5 is currently chugging away at that(for the next 2hrs or so...) But one oddity with techtool, it shows a phantom 384meg DIMM in slot B6... Apple system profile just shows the DIMMS that are really there, so I donno if it's a bug in Techtool, or if there's some hardware glitch on the motherboard? so there it is, any clues!?!?! I really need to get this thing funtioning flawlessly so I can off load all my stuff from the g3, because I can't bring it into work till I do! -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
