Vern,

FWIW: Eudora 5.1 runs fine on two Macs at my house, both 9.1, with
our ADSL connection. Here are the settings.
Checking mail: protocol = POP (depends on server, wrong setting
won't work), Authentication = passwords (depends on server
requirements), save pasword (chk), overlap commands (unchk), checked:
send on check; leave on server for 2 days;. Others on this screen
unchecked.
Sending Mail: name of the host. Check allow authorization. The rest
is not too important.
Hosts: names of the servers entered; all boxes unchecked

How much memory do you have allocated to Eudora? Is it using all of
it (and begging for more)?

Are some or all of your mailboxes very large? You might try moving
them to another folder (one at a time or all at once). Then start up
Eudora and see if they were slowing you down.

You should be able to see if the problem is in checking mail or
sending mail or both. Those operations can be done separately,
although the default preference is to send mail on a check. The SMTP
server is used to send. The POP or IMAP server is used to receive.

Do you have a very large number of old messages still on the server?

I would trash all the preferences and just re-enter the essential
ones (hostnames and account names & passwords). The default settings
may be better than what you have now, if they are different. Check
the settings for host names and protocols in the mail programs that
are working.

Hope this helps,
Dan
