ok, I've tried a number of the suggestions posted, coulden't get Gauge Pro to work, says I don't have MPLibrary or something like that. Tried each one of my DIMMs alone, still no go. However it doesn't seem to be having the random freezes any more. Now I'm thinking those were most likely due to heat, since I haven't had that problem since I replaced the fan, and put a new glob of heat transfer pastygoo on the processor. As well the temps in my house have been in the mid low 70's, couple of days ago they were in the mid-high 80's (evap coolers don't work well when it gets humid..) As well I've been running with the case off (I still don't think the Powesupply fan is moving enough air to properly cool the case)
BUT! it still freezes *every* time I try and send a file to it. I've tested using the built in Ethernet and the 10/100 card sending from my Powerbook and my B&W g3. Tried every time I used a diffrent DIMM (what a pain that was to change those every time uuugh, bad case design!) But, the machine is fine if I'm say using iTunes on my powerbook and listining to songs on the 9500... works just great... I can also log into the g3 or powerbook from the 9500 and copy files to the 9500 with out freezes... SO I'm starting to wonder if it's just an OS problem... the powerbook is running OS 9.2.1, the g3 is running OS 10.1.5 and the 9500 is running OS 8.6 I wanted to try 9.x on the 9500 but my OS 9.1 disk doesn't seem to work right, I get an error half way through install, some problem with the install files :( happens on the built in CD, booting from the CD or not, over the network from the g3's DVD-ROM drive, or from a disk image... Now on another note, which might be related, I've started having problems with the CD-ROM drive now too, it occationally loads realllllly slow(I could leave the room, and take a shower and get ready to go out, and it still wasn't done opining a folder...) and it freezes when I try and copy a file from it... Than after a re-start it was working fine and copied that same file, same disk with out a problem. Makes me wonder if there's an issue with the internal SCSI, since the origional 1gig was pritty bad, would make long pauses when copying files, things would get corrupted, sometimes it woulden't boot(used to have to use my external RAID to boot the machine reliably) I have yet to test it in another machine, but maybe it wasn't the drive? could the SCSI bus have caused the degridation of the drive over time? Lastly, I have no other processor to test the machine with... I gave the origional 132 away in my old PowerTowerPro (the 225 from that machine fried it's self when it came loose from the processor slot) Also for those who asked, the processor is a 'helmwind' from what I've been told it's basically the same as the MachV in the 8600/9600 but it doesn't have all inline cache and what not those machines have. From what I know the 604e was never made as a 250MHz, 225MHz was the highest (some clone makers used 225MHz chips overclocked to 250..) So this chip is sorta in between the 604e and the MachV... Though this is what I've heard from others, including some from Mike Breeden who runs xlr8your mac, I was asking around a while back because I was thinking about over clocking it, never did though. -sam -- PCI-PowerMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
